Blog Post #1

For my final project, I want to explore the correlation between a person's social standing versus where they end up attending college. Many people find that being a part of the upper class opens more opportunities for that student. In my final project, I want to explore why society believes this.

  1. The relationship between college and social class is a good topic. Armstrong and Hamilton are very helpful on that score and point to a lot of good research. They point out that college used to be the main vehicle for class advancement, especially for the middle class, but it is losing its power to help the middle class today because of privatization. If you were interested in the history here, you might start with the book Fear of Falling by Barbara Ehrenreich, which discusses college quite a bit and offers a fascinating contrast to today's situation. But there are a lot of current books also.

Start by looking at some readings -- especially those mentioned by Armstrong and Hamilton. Don't just write about what you know. Look at the research on college and social class.
